Project Lead
NMR
NMR is a London-based media technology solutions provider and systems integrator. The company led the ReCAP consortium, coordinating the technical and commercial development of the platform.
Four European technology organisations came together to build the ReCAP platform, combining expertise in systems integration, broadcast applications, media processing, and applied research.
The ReCAP project was delivered by a consortium of four partners spanning the UK, Austria, and Germany. Each brought distinct capabilities to the development of an automatic content analysis platform for metadata-driven media workflows.

Technology Partner
Tools On Air develops broadcast ingest, playout, shared storage, and real-time graphics applications. Their expertise contributed to the real-time processing capabilities of the ReCAP platform.
Technology Partner
Nablet provides streaming, codec, muxing, and transcoding solutions. Their media processing technology supported the platform's ability to handle diverse broadcast-quality video formats.
Research Partner
Joanneum Research is an Austrian nonprofit organisation focused on applied research. The institute brought scientific rigour to the development of the platform's automatic content analysis algorithms.
This project received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 732461. The consortium was awarded approximately €1 million in December 2016.
The ReCAP consortium brought together a diverse group of partners from across Europe, each contributing specialised expertise in content analysis, media technology, and broadcast innovation. By combining their knowledge of automatic metadata generation, visual recognition, and scalable processing workflows, the team worked collaboratively to address the challenges facing modern media production. This cooperation allowed the project to explore new approaches for managing the growing volume of audiovisual content, ensuring that both large broadcasters and smaller media companies could benefit from advanced, cost-effective solutions tailored to their needs.
A central objective of the ReCAP project was to develop a flexible platform capable of handling multiple content sources and delivery targets simultaneously. As media consumption shifts rapidly across devices and platforms, the ability to process and enrich content in real time becomes essential. The platform was designed to support heterogeneous inputs, from traditional broadcast feeds to mobile video, and to output rich metadata that improves search, discovery, and asset management. This adaptability helps media organisations maintain quality and efficiency in an increasingly complex digital landscape.
Automatic content analysis formed the technological backbone of the ReCAP initiative, enabling the extraction of meaningful information from video and audio streams without manual intervention. By leveraging advances in machine learning and computer vision, the project aimed to reduce the time and cost associated with traditional metadata creation. These tools empower content owners to unlock the value of their archives, making historical footage accessible and searchable for new audiences. Such capabilities are particularly valuable for broadcasters and creative industries facing pressure to deliver personalised, on-demand experiences.
The impact of the ReCAP project extends beyond its technical deliverables, contributing to the broader European research and innovation ecosystem. Funded under the Horizon 2020 programme, the project exemplifies how public-private partnerships can drive progress in digital media technologies. The outcomes of this collaboration provide a foundation for future developments in real-time content processing, helping to shape industry standards and best practices. By addressing real-world challenges in media production and distribution, ReCAP has helped pave the way for more agile, data-driven workflows across the sector.
